Steps to try opening problematic Excel program/Excel document
Option A)
Open Excel program in Safe Mode
1. Start --> Run , type "excel.exe -s" , click OK

Option B)
Use Google Docs to open your Excel document
1. Goto http://docs.google.com, login with your Google/Gmail account
2. Click Upload
If Google cannot open your .xls file, most likely the file is corrupted!
